My Life Journey

After attending 12 weeks of Creativity and Innovation class, I going to use pictorial to describe from my birth till now; the journey of my life. It was quite fun doing the chart and hoping it can also help me to remember what I have went thru the past years when I get old.

Week13 Pugh Decision

Pugh Decision analysis matrix is a tool in the Six Sigma toolbox. The optimum use of the tool is for those situations where we have many alternative concepts to choose from, with each concept entailing multiple attributes (product / process considerations).

The process flow for tool use is:

  1. From Six Sigma, Define the problem.
  2. Define the cross-functional team that will work on the problem
  3. Define what we consider to be the “baseline”. e.g. a product or process that we have in place that is considered non-optimal.
  4. Define the requirements (CTQs ~“attributes”) and criteria that will be used in the analysis.
  5. Define the alternative concepts that will be included in the analysis.
  6. Define rating scale that will be used in the prioritization and trade-off attribute analysis.
  7. Define the scaling criteria that will be used in the concept analysis.
  8. Set up the Pugh Matrix.
  9. Analyze and rank each concepts benefit.
  10. Conduct “what-if” simulation studies and re-assess concepts benefit (optional).
  11. Select the concept(s) that detail the most benefit.
  12. Initiate development/optimization analysis activities on the concept chosen.

There is a website which you can learn the basic statistical tool, have tutorial and practice tests.

Week12 Introduction to TRIZ

The last module is taught by Prof. Ang. (pic from left) He is very friendly, helpful and always put on a smilling face. In his class, he always commented positively, this make me feel comfortable attending his lesson. I believe there is more I can understand and learn from him in personal character building.
So much on Prof. Ang. Let talk on TRIZ.

What is TRIZ?
TRIZ is a problem solving method based on logic and data, not intuition, which accelerates the project team's ability to solve these problems creatively. TRIZ also provides repeatability, predictability, and reliability due to its structure and algorithmic approach. Some of the analytic methods are:

  • The Ideal Final Result and Ideality
  • Functional Modeling, Analysis and Trimming
  • Locating the Zones of Conflict

Some are more prescriptive such as:

  • The 40 Inventive principles of Problem Solving
  • The separation Principles
  • Laws of Technical Evolution and Technology Forecasting
  • 76 Standard Solutions

Those who are interested to know in TRIZ in depth and practice 40 principles of problem Solving, visit this website http://www.triz-journal.com/whatistriz.htm. This website also show some example on using TRIZ to come out with possible solutions on a particular problem.

Week11 Business Plan

Tonight, Dr Charles Lee invited 2 guest speakers to share their life experience.

Mr. Piau Voon Wang (pic. from left) opened Adams Street Partners' Singapore office in 2006. He actively participates in all fund investment decisions at Adams Street.

What I learned from him is, Interpersonal and ppl-ppl networking is important to extract high level info. Judging ppl is a very important skill to see whether his/her character is good to make good investment for u.
Risk taking is necessary in life especially when there is nothing to lose. It might turn out to be successful in life.
Another guest speaker, Mr. Richard Chen founded Vincera Capital in 1997 and served as President in 1997 and later as Chairman & CEO since 2002.
What I learned from him is, his decision on business investment sometime based on his feelings. I bet his feelings must be damm accurate.
But the actual lesson for tonight is all business plan. Why we need a business plan?
1. Reach agreement among team members.
2. Requires to attract investors.
What must be include in the business plan?
1. Executive Summary
2. Background
3. Marketing plan
4. Development plan
5. Operations plan
6. Management
7. Financial plan
8. Risk factors
9. Appendices
Summary:
A Great Idea + A Great Team + A Great Plan = Great Business.

Week10 Technology Brokering

What is Technology Brokering?

Technology brokers pursue an innovation strategy of technology brokering that enabled them to exploit the past in creating the future.

Technology brokering involves combining existing objects, ideas and people in ways that spark technology revolutions.

3 factors that will affect success in innovation business

  • Maket Oriented
  • Financially Driven
  • Technology Based

Week8 The Practice of Innovation - Part 2

This week Prof. Hang is going to illustrate Interpretation is essential thinking process for Innovation. Interpretation is an open-ended process and plays in the space of "ambiguity". It is ambiguity that makes the conversation worth having. Cell phone emerged in the space created by the ambiguity about whether the product was a radio or a telephone. Novelty and originality lie in the space of ambiguity.

1 classic example: A glass half-filled with water or a glass is half empty depend on how u interpret it.

1 industry example: Sony developed walkman in 1979. At that time, this product is considered "irrational" product development so the price of the walkman is Y33,000 which the japanese youth can afford. First month, nobody bought the walkman. During second month, Yuppies unexpectedly became "heavy users", then followed by teenagers. Sales suddenly expoded in 3rd month and walkman out of stock.

If any one of you observe any market uncertainty or failure in certain products, there is a chance for innovation to take place by using interpretation think process.

5th of Oct Seminar by Dr David E. Goldberg

The topic for the seminar was about the creativity imperative and the technology professional of the future by Dr David E. Goldberg. His speech is good and inspire us on how to be a creative person and become a TPOF (technology professional of the future).

What he mentioned: to be a TPOF; this are the various points to be noted:

  1. Customer pull, not tech push.
  2. Cannot change in current departments alone.
  3. Cannot do it with tech knowledge alone.
  4. Cannot do it without human-centered design understanding.
  5. Cannot do it by ignoring widespread tech ignorance.
  6. Cannot ignore challenge of tabula rasa.
  7. Cannot stick with PPG, proposals and grants.

He also recommended a book "A whole new mind" by Daniel H. Pink which demonstrate 6 skills for WNM.

Week7 The Practice of Innovation - Part 1

This week lesson is taught by prof. Hang (Pic. on the left). He is the head of the Management of Science and Technology. He is going to conduct how to practice innovation within the organization and outside of the industry. There are 7 sources for innovation opportunity.

4 sources lie within the enterprise which are :
> The unexpected

> The incongruity

> Process needs

> Changes in industry or market structure

3 sources lie outside the enterprise which are :

> Demographics

> Changes in perception

> New knowledge, both scientific and non-scientific

Week6 Idea generation - Part 1

Today lesson is about different methods of generating ideas. One interesting method is by wearing six thinking hats when generating ideas. What are the six kinds of hats?

White hat : Information & reports; lays the groundwork; not evaluation

Red hat : Intuition, opinion & emotion

Yellow hat : Praise, positive aspects, benefits and strong points of an idea

Black hat : Criticism, negative aspects; devil's advocate; anticipation of potential difficulties

Green hat : Alternatives, new approaches & 'everything goes'

Blue hat : "Big Picture", "Conductor hat", "Meta hat", "thinking about thinking", overall process; ensures rules of "six hats" are observed; summarizes and concludes discussion

What are the purpose of the "6 hats"?

  • focus and improve the thinking process
  • encourage creative, parallel and laternal thinking
  • improve communication
  • speed up decision making
  • avoid debate

Week5 Creativity Fundamentals - Part 2

Is a Sat morning, I have to wake up early to attend makeup lesson for Creativity n innovation module. I am so tired because Friday there is night class on this module. Luckily the lesson was not so boring, the class was asked to draw the side profile of a human face and a mirror reflection of the face so the pictures will look like a vase. This topic was took from a website: http://www.drawright.com/. Today lesson is more about how to use different part of your brain to think on different issue. We have to change our mental barriers to be creative. Eg. I am not creative, Only intelligent minds are good thinks. We have to change our habit barriers. Eg. how many buses need to carry 100ppls, walk from pt. A to pt. B. We have to change our attitude barriers. Eg. Negative, pessimitic thinking, fear of failure.

In life, we are to comfort with the kind of lifestyle we adapt and most of the time we are so relutanct to change. We just wait for someone to come out with better ideas to make our life even better. This really make us part of the non-creative creature on the Earth.

Week 4 Creativity Culture - Part 2

This evening, Dr Charles Lee invited a special guest; he is Dr Patrick Sim (The picture on the left). He is the head of the Sales & Marketing department of Orange Business services in AP. He has share on one of his most challenging project. He has 8 different network operators which Dr Patrick Sim describe them as 8 leopards which individual operators want their users to use back their own network when they are oversea. In this case, Dr Patrick Sim manage to provide a solutions to all 8 leopards and at the same time sell his own advertisments, which create a win-win situation in his business profile.

In life, we always tried to take advantage from others to create a win-win situation for ourselves but don't you think by helping others and you are able to gain benefits is a better way.

Week3 Creativity Culture - Part 1

Today the lesson is lectured by Dr charles Lee (Picture on the left).

He is not a full time lecturer, his main job is in business. Dr Charles has a proven track record as a successful venture capitalist. That evening, he has share with us his own life experenice with us. Dr charles Lee has success in venture capital both Asian-American in business, the only answer is team building. And last but not least, he has given me 3 points which I find it very relevant in my life.

            1. Life is Difficult!

            2. __ doesn't care!

            3. Look for good!

            Week2 Creativity Fundamentals - Part 1

This is the first lesson for MT5003 (Creativity and Innovation). Never expect the class to be so big with 82 students . After attending the lesson, all students are encourage to comment in the forum on the following format:

            • What you have learned in the class?
            • How to apply what you have learned?
            • How you will use what you have learned personally in your life?
            • Any comments

This is really a very interesting module which I never come across in my life. Normally, we have to do assignments and take quiz but not for this module.
